Creative digital media production - BTEC

The creative digital media production - BTEC provides an introduction to and develops an understanding of the media industry through analysing media representations and pitching and producing media projects. During the course you will develop a range of skills relevant to the creative media sector.

What skills do I need?

To succeed in this course you will need to be creative with  good planning and organisational skills. You will also need good time keeping, good attendance and be able to work independently.

How is the course graded?

The course consists of four units, three of which are mandatory and two that are externally assessed. The mandatory units are:

  • Media representations – assessed by external written exam.
  • Pre-production portfolio – this will be assessed internally and will require a portfolio to be created which will link into a secondary optional unit.
  • Responding to a commission – externally assessed case study to be completed within a certain time period.

The optional units are:

  • Website production – assessed internally
  • Digital magazine production - assessed internally 

What is next for me after this course?

Following completion of the course, students can progress to a Level 3 (advanced) course. The course prepares students for entry to college to study creative media related subjects.

Students can also progress to employment in areas including; web design, photography, graphic design and gaming.

Course Content (for A level, how this follows on from GCSE)

The course consists of 4 units, 3 of which are mandatory and 2 externally assessed. 

The units are:

Unit 1 - Media Representations – assessed by external written exam.

Students will consider how different media representations are constructed by media producers to

create meaning, messages and values.

Unit 4 – Pre Production Portfolio – this will be assessed internally and will require a portfolio to be created which will link into a secondary optional unit.

Students study the requirements of planning and delivering a digital media product, carrying out essential  pre-production tasks and creating a pre-production portfolio.

Unit 8 – Responding to a Commission – externally assessed case study to be completed within a certain time period.

Students consider the commissioning process and how media producers respond to clients by generating ideas using a range of skills.

Unit 12 – Website production – assessed internally and linked to Unit 4 above.

Students will be introduced to the fundamental technologies, principles and practices that underpin

contemporary website production. Students will then create their own website based on a scenario.
