Our English and arts departments are currently involved in a three-day project run by Newcastle University, in conjunction with Historic England and English Heritage.
The project, 'A Sense of Place', began with students exploring a new collection of poetry, 'Up In the Air' by Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage. Students then composed their own poetry with the support of the former Belfast Poet Laureate, Sinead Morrisey.
Day two and three will involve a visit to Northumberland National Park to learn about the rich history and heritage of the park, supported by the English Heritage and led by a National Park Ranger. During the day, students will explore Simon Armitage's poetry in the places where he composed the collection and use these experiences to create their own original poetry.
On the final day of the festival, students will work in the fine art department of Newcastle University to produce artwork in conjunction with the students' own poetry compositions.
Lisa Herbertson, Director of English said: "As you can imagine, we have been very excited about this opportunity, and are delighted that our students are involved in such a prestigious project."
The students' work will be going on public display at The Sill during July and August. Watch this space...
